Best described as a low-budget After Hours meets Eyes Wide Shut, Joe Maggio's sophomore effort Milk and Honey suffers from some shaky acting performances and a handful of draggy sections, but if you stick with it I bet you'll find some satisfaction before the end credits roll.

The setting is NYC and an estranged married couple are going through a tough time. He's recently suffered some sort of emotional breakdown, while she struggles through the situation at the end of her rope. Things come to a humiliating head when hubby Rick proposes re-marriage to his long-suffering spouse Joyce.

Her reaction is less than enthusiastic, publicly crushing Rick and beginning a rather hot argument. Hubby storms out into the night before asking a total stranger to murder him. After cooling off a bit, Joyce takes to the street in an effort to locate her husband.

To divulge the length and breadth of their night-time misadventures would be a disservice to any potential viewers, so let's just leave things there. Though hardly an improvement over Maggio's debut film Virgil Bliss, Milk and Honey manages to tell a rather interesting tale (two, actually) for much of its 90 minutes. The lead performances (by Clint Jordan and Kirsten Russell) buoy the flick through its perioidic dry spells, and it's a testament to their work (and Maggio's screenplay) that you slowly begin to CARE about these two bickering misfits.

Virgil Bliss is a movie that really took me by surprise, so it's reassuring to see Maggio batting 2 for 2 so far. Milk and Honey (very low budget, shot on video, grainy and grassroots) may not be everyone's cup of coffee, but you could do a hell of a lot worse while cruising the indie circuit.
