| CARAMEL |
"Sticky and sweet."
Rob Gonsalves says... "Beirut is a beautiful place, except for the crap that has nothing to do with most of the people who live there and just try to get through the day. So we Americans were told by Anthony Bourdain in his excellent "No Reservations" episode filmed in Beirut when the 2006 Israeli bombings started, and so we are also told by "Caramel," which sketches a country in a sort of blurred limbo between Islamic fundamentalism and a more Westernized, Catholic-inflected lifestyle." | I THINK WE'RE ALONE NOW |
"Children, behave!"
David Cornelius says... "SCREENED AT THE 2008 FANTASTIC FEST: In June 1988, Jeff Turner arrived at a California courthouse to greet teen pop idol Tiffany during her emancipated minor hearing. He brought with him a dozen flowers and a Japanese sword. Security arrested him, the press labeled him a stalker, and the incident would lead to a restraining order - all of which Turner says was just, you know, a big misunderstanding." (more)

| TRAITOR |
"Flawed, but surprisingly solid, political thriller/action film."
Mel Valentin says... ""Traitor," the new political thriller/action film written and directed by Jeffrey Nachmanoff from a story by Steve Martin (["Shopgirl," "Bowfinger," "L.A. Story," "Roxanne," "The Jerk") is one part "Donnie Brasco," one part "The Fugitive," one part "The Departed," one part "Sleeper Cell" (the 2005-06 Showtime series), and one (small) part "Bourne." While that might make "Traitor" sound highly or even wholly derivative, there's more at play here than predictable plot turns and twists. When the wheels of the convoluted, complicated storyline aren’t turning, "Traitor" is an often thought-provoking, intelligent drama that explores, if not always successfully, the struggle within Islam between accommodation and extremism. Heady stuff, certainly, more so for its appearance in a late summer release (i.e., where mediocre movies go quietly into the box office night)." (more)

| BOY A |
"This one deserves both a first and second chance."
Lybarger says... "The new British film ‘Boy A’ poses a question that is easy to ask but nearly impossible to answer: Can we ever really escape from our own misdeeds?" (more)

| HAMLET 2 |
"The slings and arrows of outrageous folly."
Lybarger says... "Like its title, 'Hamlet 2' shouldn’t work." (more)

| HOUSE BUNNY, THE |
"It's all about the Faris."
Rob Gonsalves says... "I have serious problems with "The House Bunny" as a movie that girls and young women are going to be watching and perhaps emulating, but Anna Faris, that great clown princess, helped me look past many of them." (more)

| WILD BLUE YONDER |
"Maysles at war."
Jason Whyte says... "SCREENED AT THE 2008 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL: Don’t you always hate it when this happens: your father is a documentary filmmaker who has made some of the most important documents of the 20th century. He covered The Rolling Stones, ex-first lady Jackie Kennedy along with wacky salespeople, and has been championed by the film industry as the best in their game. Now, you want to do a profile on your father who died nearly a decade ago but your uncle rejects the idea as it may interfere with a film that he is trying to do." (more)

DVD REVIEWS FOR 8/29: RETURN OF THE DOUBLE DIP. by Peter Sobczynski |
| "A number of familiar titles return to DVD in brand-new special editions--are they worth the upgrade? Continue reading and find out. Hey, even if you don't care, you should still continue reading since a lot of time and effort went into this week's column and, quite frankly, it is the least you can do." (more) |

P-P-P-PORN?!: THE EVA-LUTION OF EVA ANGELINA by L. Pete Morton |
| "Rarely does a porn babe spring fully-formed into our consciousness. For every woman who manages to get a nice contract from the outset of her career and begins her work in attention-catching, eye-opening, big-budget porn extravaganzas, there are dozens of girls who put in their time in the trenches, if you know what I mean. Most of these girls just do a few scenes and go back to waitressing or bikini modeling or whatever, but a few keep plugging away, if you know what I mean, and go from blue collar success story to a true porn star who pulled herself up by the bootstraps, if you know what I mean." DANE KOOK: STEVE COOGAN ON "HAMLET 2" by Peter Sobczynski |
