Sydney Film Festival - Day 10

by Michael Collins

Day 10 for me was to be only one film, Rampage. A documentary that is a follow up to The Soundtrack of War.

In Soundtrack, Elliot Lovett said that his home streets back in Miami were more dangerous than Baghdad.

So director George Gittoes went to find out and there he meets Elliot’s brothers Denzil and Marcus. The whole family is talented, but it’s the brothers who are the talented ones.

So we see how awful their living conditions are and how wonderfully talented the trio of brothers are.

That’s all well and good, but this is a well worn path, nothing special and indeed par for the course for some of hip hop.

This film is different because the lengths that Gittoes goes to get into these kids lives. As he has said, Gittoes isn’t a stand back and just watch, he gets right in the thick of it.

It’s also special because of the continuation of the story started in Soundtrack to War. Gittoes has had a long interest in war zones and he has taken that knowledge and experience to good effect to provide insight into yet another war zone.

That's the first week of the festival over and done with. Am into the final stretch now.
